White Oak Creek

Alejandro Hirsch Saed • February 22, 2018

The water streams down, opening its way through the rocks.

The sunlight enters from the east, bringing the colors to life.

The crisp autumn wind calms everything around.

Everything is alive, everything is moving. Everything but you.

As you sit down and cross your legs, you breathe in slowly, and just as your lungs fill up, every cell in your body stops moving. A green leaflike bug walks up to you slowly. As soon as it touches your skin, it opens its wings and flies away. A cloud covers the sun.

You can only see, smell and listen, but not move.

Your toes get cold and hard, then your feet, and you feel it coming up your ankles.

The landscape is so beautiful, you don't mind the cold. You try to breathe out, its not possible anymore. The cold keeps coming up, now to your knees.

Your skin is turning gray, like the rock you’re seating on.

Your mind starts saying goodbye and clearing off. The cold is on your neck.

Your mouth smiles, and you prepare to become part of the rock, part of the landscape, part of everything.

A strong buzz of wind takes over your ears, you can see millions of the leaflike bugs flying towards you.

As your whole body gets cold, the bugs cover you completely.

Now you are part of the rock and the stream, finally at peace.

Fiction | On the east of the plane the vast body of water of the Gulf of Mexico; under the brown earth; on the west the volcanoes, fuming their fiery breath elegantly; and me floating in the air, above the cotton candy clouds. I am this country. This country is majestic. I’m not.
